My Top 5 Travel Books

Before I go anywhere I like to read up on the destination ahead of time. Brochures today do a great job of pointing out the must-see’s but I turn to novels and memoirs to get a feel for a place. Here are my top 5:

  1. The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway – Perhaps my favorite book. Hemingway’s brisk writing cuts right to the heart of the great locations from Paris to Pamplona.
  2. On The Road by Jack Kerouac – My life since reading this classic American novel has never been the same. Follow Sal Paradise as he makes his way to San Francisco and back.
  3. Into the Wild by John Krakauer – This great work of journalism speaks to what wanderlust and life are all about.
  4. Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain – Already covered Twain’s trip to Paris, Venice, Athens and the Holy Land. Read here. While you are at it, check out Roughing It.
  5. In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin – It’s like being with Chatwin on the southern tip of South America. This amazing piece of literature really ramps up the excitement for any trip.

Help me make this a top 10 list. What are you favorites? Dubliners by James Joyce? Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes? How about Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne?

Bill Bryson has some great books related to travel. In particular “In a Sunburned Country” is great for the long plane ride to Australia. It humorously introduces you to some of the ‘unique’ things about Australia. And he has a good one about Europe too, “Neither Here Nor There-
    Travels in Europe”.
