Reality Tour 2: We’ve laid a lot of track
We are on the home stretch of our Reality Tour.
As the sun comes up, Chad and I help to load the luggage and then we head down to the Ft. Bragg cliffs again.
They look different in the morning. The horizon seems further off and the sea angrier.
Yes, we are at the end. Near the end of the tour. At the end of the continent.
Several houses dot the cliffs. On the east coast a spot like this would have already been overdeveloped. It’s nice to stand in a place that retains a little bit of the wild. Ah. California, where everything is shiny and new.
It would be perfect just to rent a house and stay here for a year away from the world – maybe do some writing – cast my words out there upon the waves.
Jo and Will join us and snap a few photos. They’ve been down looking out over the ocean and the spot where the Noyo River enters the Pacific. (Later today, we’ll see the river running down through the redwoods) As they turn to go and head up the road I take a picture that, for me, captures something very special. It perfectly sums up what travel is all about.
Those two figures moving down the road together (grandmother and grandson) well the metaphors are obvious but no less powerful. They are traveling together through life – to share, to see the world, to be… family.
Will’s a lucky kid. You can see how his grandmother has passed down an infectious spirit, a love of life and a kindness towards others uncommon today.
I wish them nothing but the best of luck in whatever that road may bring.
Next up… The Skunk Train.
