Sleeping Bears and Low Airfares: Winter Travel Part 2
I’m here skiing in Upstate NY with my two daughters, Caylen and Riley. The sky is blue and the weather crisp and cold and I love it. It’s just so beautiful here.
I love winter and enjoy all there is to do this time of year. But I recognize not everyone feels the same way.
Wish you were a bear; able to sleep through winter?
For those of you less enamored with the season than I am, it probably takes all you can muster to get through the cold, dark days. Could you do with less winter? Perhaps none at all?
At the very least, how about a little reprieve from Mother Nature.
Well, here’s something I bet you didn’t know… bears and humans share 95% of the same DNA! So what happened?
It seems many millennia ago, Homo sapiens evolved much differently than other mammals. We got a bigger brain and an opposing thumb – bears didn’t. But with this, we had to give something up. Can’t have your cake and eat it too. So we had to give up the ability to sleep through winter, and so it remains today.
Fellow human beings, I am here to tell you there are options.
Our bigger brains have created wonders the world- over. While bears sleep and winter winds howl, why not set forth and explore the tropical paradise of Panama or Costa Rica, cultures of ancient Peru, the antiquities of Egypt and Jordan, exotic India, or an unforgettable trip to the South Pacific?
Winter is a terrific time to travel. Airfares from North America to most destinations are the lowest they will be anytime of year. Many younger travelers and families are prohibited from traveling through the school season and therefore lower airfares and tour prices reflect lower demand. However, anyone who can travel November through April should take full advantage of their ability to do so. There’s a wealth of destinations and experiences awaiting you – all at a value that can’t be beat.
Trending does show that more and more and more 50+ travelers are doing so. Case in point, I recently booked Collette’s London and Paris trip for me and my daughters during their March Break this year. I was extremely fortunate to do so when I did. Shortly thereafter it was sold out.
I’m ecstatic to be taking my daughters on this trip. Sure the weather in London and Paris may not be what it could be in June or July but odds are, it’ll be better then back home. Regardless, warm weather wasn’t the impetus for this family trip; if it had been we’d have undoubtedly chosen something different. This is a vacation of exploration and discovery for us as a family, and I assure you, no amount of bad weather will sully it.
Don’t let winter get the better of you! Half the globe is bathed in sunlight and blessed with long days and warm weather while most of the northern hemisphere endures a cold winter and what seems like only a few hours of daylight. If winter isn’t your thing, you can’t make it go away and you can’t sleep it off, but you can definitely escape it!

Brett,
A brilliant idea and what you say bears consideration. In fact, the more I think about your bear idea the more I realize I’m not going to bear this damn winter any longer. So long live bears and sign me up for bear vacation from winter.
