Saddle Up for the Calgary Stampede
Stage shows, chuckwagon racing, First Nation cultural events and of course the RODEO – it must be the internationally acclaimed Calgary Stampede.
Started by Guy Weadick and 4 wealthy Alberta cattlemen in 1912, this event was designed to blow Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Extravaganza out of the water. And by all accounts it still does just that, even as 2012 will mark the Stampede’s 100th anniversary.
This is a chance for one of the jewels of the Canadian Rockies – Calgary – to shine.
There are six major components to the rodeo portion of the event: bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie down roping, saddle bronc and bareback riding. These are rodeo’s roughest champions competing for its richest prize. Check out the official site which features the excellent Bull Riding 101.

Combine the elegant Fairmont resorts and stunning landscapes of Jasper and Banff with the raucous western vibe of the Stampede and now you are talking.
I’ve been writing about Calgary so much that I’m tempted to just jump on a plane and go. Who would have thought you could find a vibrant arts scene so close to the beauty of the mountains.
Plus, how many chances will you have to say you experienced The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth?
