Starting a chain reaction

Last week I had the opportunity to see the powerful and moving presentation  “Rachel’s Challenge” in my local community. So named to honor the mission of the first victim of the horrific Columbine High School massacre in 1999, it challenges each individual present to accept Rachel Joy Scott’s call to treat others with kindness and compassion in order to change the world and make it a better place to live.

During the course of the evening, the Rachel’s Challenge presenter revealed the five life commitments that are the tenents of the Challenge including, to realize that kind words and actions have huge results.

“Compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer…” Scott wrote before her death. “I have this theory tht if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same.”

Schools across the nation have accepted the challenge and the presentation was given in my town at the middle and high school level so my 7th grade daughter was able to witness it as well. It made for inspired conversation that evening.

What strikes me about the challenge is the utter beauty and simplicity of making a difference one kind act at a time. It reminds me of the mission of the Collette Foundation whose goal is to improve the quality of life of children worldwide – one project at a time.

Collette’s President and CEO Dan Sullivan, Jr. has remarked,“It is our hope that the Collette Foundation will inspire others and make a difference one community, and one project at a time.

When you think of it in those terms, like Rachel’s challenge, it seems that inspiring change is attainable – and something we can all aspire to.

I know I’d at least like to try.

From doing our best to help in Christchurch to opening a bakery in a South African township, the Collette Foundation has been busy lately.
