Escorted Travel for Loners?
I’ve made no secret about how much I enjoyed my first escorted tour. Yet, deep down I’m a loner. It’s not in my nature to seek out travel in groups (or groups of any kind).
My impressions of this kind of trip before hand was that we’d all be jammed together, herded around, fed and put on a plane back home.
Of course this wasn’t true at all.
Even in a busy itinerary, I had plenty of time on my own. Whether it was watching the redwoods go by on the Skunk Train or grabbing a beer and reading a book at Vesuvio’s in San Francisco, if I wanted to be by myself I could.
But pretty soon I found myself seeking out fellow passengers, learning about their lives and families back home. And as one experience built upon the one before it, we all grew closer. I dare say we became like a little family. Just check out the comments on this post.
Many friendships began over those 9 days.
That was the biggest surprise of the trip. I am friends on Facebook with some of my fellow travelers and still trade emails with others.
Escorted travel opened my eyes in many ways. It offered a perfect mix for the social and loner parts of my personality.
