Five for Friday: Shenandoah Celebrates 75 Years
Shenandoah National Park celebrates its 75th anniversary this year after being dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on July 3, 1936. This Virginia Park boasts nearly 200,000 acres and draws in more than 1.2 million visitors a year. Shenandoah is filled with beauty and history but also offers many recreational opportunities to appeal to multiple interests.
Collette visits Shenandoah National Park on our Heritage of America tour.
We visit the park via Skyline Drive, a beautiful 105-mile stretch of road along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains with scenic overlooks and panoramic vistas. This 10-day tour also includes New York City, Philadelphia, Mount Vernon, and Washington D.C.
While celebrating your patriotism, here are 5 things not to miss:
- Visit the moving World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial in Washington D.C.
- Walk in the footsteps of American history with a visit to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.
- Visit the world-famous Smithsonian Institution, home to the largest and most extensive collections of artifacts in the world.
- Explore the “Big Apple” and see all of New York City’s famous landmarks – Greenwich Village, the Chrysler Building, Wall Street district and Chinatown.
- Learn about the life of George Washington with a visit to Mount Vernon, the home that he shared with his wife Martha.
