Capturing Newport

Newport BridgeThis guest post comes from Kateland Dittig, an intern at Collette Vacations. She is currently studying Communications and Journalism at Keene State College.

When I was given the opportunity to join the Collette videographers for a day and film Newport, I was more than enthralled. I never thought I would be given the chance to leave the office and paperwork behind to explore Rhode Island.

We couldn’t have picked a better day to go on an adventure. The weather was perfect. There was a crisp breeze and the sun’s rays shimmered across the ocean water. The first stop of the day was Goat Island, which surprisingly as a local, I had never been to. We crept around the Hyatt Hotel to get the perfect view of the suspension bridge and a small lighthouse.

CameraIt was at this moment that the leader of the group whipped out the company’s 21 megapixel camera. My jaw dropped. I had never seen a lens so massive. It was something you would see National Geographic photographers using. The only camera I embarked on the journey with was my lousy phone which only had 3.0 megapixels. Now you can see why I was honored when they trusted me to hold the $3000 piece of equipment and take photographs. It was like I was basically holding a telescope. From the island I could see the drivers of the cars on the Newport bridge. It was a memorable experience.

After we headed down to Historical part of town. We walked the streets and got some great footage of tourists and native islanders coming in an out of shops, driving mopeds, and soaking up the warm sun. A couple hours passed by and our stomachs began to grumble. We decided to take a break and enjoy some of the fresh ocean state cuisine. We stopped at an outdoor restaurant and munched on a satisfying and affordable meal.

Our tummies were content and we were ready to continue. Our next trip was to the scenic Ocean Drive. We passed by hundreds of mansions, which I hope to one day reside in! We stopped at a small beach and got a few more shots of the white tips crashing onto the sand. Subsequently we hopped in the vehicle and made our way to the Marble House mansion where we were supposed to meet up with a tour group. We took some fantastic pictures while we waited for them. Unfortunately their bus was running a tad late and we had to go back to Collette so we were never able to get together.

Newport HarborI learned a lot from this experience. Even though it may seem these videographers have it easy, they have to put in a lot of time and effort. Every shot that the viewer watches on a commercial or online clip it just a snippet of hours of film. The crew members have to make sure the lighting is right, nothing is obstructing views, and deal with a lot of other factors. It was eye opening.

Overall the day was extremely pleasant and it made me realize that there is so much to do once you go over the bridge. You can shop, eat delicious food, or just walk around and enjoy all the beautiful scenery it has to offer. The toll is worth every single penny.

Newport is truly an enchanted location. Maybe some of my work will show up in the brochure for Islands of New England.
